Effect of pH on the Strength and Fatigue of Fused Silica Optical Fiber
نویسندگان
چکیده
The fatigue behavior of both bare and polymer coated silica optical fiber has been determined in various buffered pH solutions. Bare and polymer coated fibers were studied to distinguish any coating effects. Numerical integration techniques were utilized to fit the data to three kinetics models, and the fatigue parameters were calculated together with their corresponding confidence ellipses. The apparent reaction order for the reaction between the OH ion and SiO2 between pH 4 and pH 10 was determined to be ∼ 0.3 and this value is independent of the kinetics model used to fit to the data. The relationship between fatigue and pH is nonlinear; indicating different mechanisms at high, low, and intermediate pH.

Apparent activation energy of fused silica optical fibers in static fatigue in aqueous environments
Static fatigue of fused silica optical fiber is known to be caused by stress assisted reaction of silica with ambient moisture. Past studies have often been conducted in hot water to accelerate experiments compared with cooler vapor environment. However, changes in the pH of water with temperature has an important influence on the fatigue rate, but has been ignored in the literature. To study t...
متن کاملStress dependent activation entropy for dynamic fatigue of pristine silica optical fibers
Subcritical crack growth in fused silica is treated as a stress assisted chemical reaction between water and strained bonds at the crack tip. In this work, the kinetics of the reaction is modeled by assuming the stress reduces the energy barrier of the activated complex by affecting both the activation enthalpy and entropy, where the stress dependence can take different forms. This theory is co...
متن کاملEnvironmental effects on fatigue and lifetime predictions for silica optical fibers
This paper reviews the dependence of strength and fatigue of fused silica optical fiber on the environmental parameters temperature, humidity and pH. It is shown that the stress corrosion parameter, n, is not a constant but depends on the nature of the environment. Further, different kinetic forms for the stress corrosion kinetics lead to different interpretations of experimental results. Since...
متن کاملEnhanced fatigue and aging resistance using reactive powders in the optical fiber buffer coating
We have shown in previous work that the addition of small quantities of colloidal silica to the UVcurable polymer coating of fused silica optical fiber causes a dramatic improvement in the fatigue and aging resistance both in aqueous and in constant humidity environments. The presence of silica in the coating inhibits the mechanisms responsible for the surface roughening that causes the fatigue...
متن کاملChemical Kinetics Models for the Fatigue Behavior of Fused Silica Optical Fiber
There have been numerous studies of the fatigue and strength behavior of fused silica optical fibers. However, no coherent model has emerged that self-consistently describes the simultaneous effects of stress, temperature and activity of the corroding species (e.g. water). A power law degradation kinetics model (relating the crack growth rate to the applied stress intensity factor, KI) is widel...
